McDonogh, Mt. St. Joseph, and St. Paul’s finish within three points of each other

by Billy Loverocket

The battle for the MIAA and private school state wrestling crowns, is going to be a close one this year and the final scores of last weekend’s Beast of the East Tournament bare this out.

McDonogh, Mt. St. Joseph, and St. Paul’s were all on hand at the “Beast,” held in the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware. St. Paul’s was eighth overall with 108 points, St. Joe’s 107 points placed them in the ninth slot, and McDonogh was barely behind them with 105 points and an eleventh-place finish.

St. Paul’s showing was powered by two finalists, Will Guida (106) and Kurt McHenry (113). They were the only Maryland competitors to reach the championship matches. Guida, who was unranked nationally by FloWrestling, picked off the No. 2 grappler in the country, Ryan Miller  of Blair Academy (NJ), 6-4, in the semifinals. In the finals, Guida fell to No. 8 Nick Kayal of Bergen Catholic (NJ), 4-3.

McHenry secured his second consecutive title at the Beast of the East, winning a battle of the nation’s top two 113lbers. McHenry (No. 1) edged Blair’s Trevor Mastrogiovanni (No. 2), 4-3, in the championship bout.

Jack Parr (182, No. 18 in the country) landed in fifth place after Garrett Beam (St. Joe’s Regional, NJ) forfeited their fifth-place match.

Gaels’ heavyweight, Isaac Righter, may seem like he came out of nowhere after a stellar showing that saw him place fourth. In the consolation semifinals, Righter pinned McDonogh’s defending state champion, PJ Mustipher, at the 2:34 mark of the second period.

Righter first showed his promise at St. Joe’s opening weekend dual against Wyoming Seminary (PA) at the Lake Norman Duals in North Carolina. There, Righter built an 8-1 lead before pinning Antonio Cutrie. Cutrie would go on to place fourth at the Walsh Ironman tournament. Going farther back, to last spring, Righter went to the NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach and won the 220lb freshman title. The sophomore was slated to wrestle at Magruder High School in Montgomery County last year, but an injury derailed his season.

Chris Barnabae (113) improved on last year’s eighth place finish at the Beast with a sixth place showing this year. Barnabae stormed through the consolation bracket picking up five falls along the way, including one over Dylan Shawyer (Elyria, OH), who placed sixth at 113lbs last year.

David Schultz (182) and Austin Stith (195) were sixth and seventh respectively for the Gaels.

McDonogh’s Cooper Flynn was fourth at 106lbs. Along the way, he defeated Blair’s Miller, 6-4. Jack Wimmer was seventh at 182lbs and Mustipher was fifth.

St. Mary’s Ryken’s King Sandoval placed fifth at 120lbs. Sandoval finished eighth at this weight class last year.
