Durant and Vetri to represent Sparrows Point
Two more student athletes have been identified as McCormick Unsung Hero nominees and both come from Sparrows Point High School.
Girls soccer player Emily Vetri, a member of four consecutive Class 1A state championship teams, and Bruce Durant, III, a member of the Pointers football team, will represent their school at the 2018 Unsung Heroes Banquet, this May.
Nearly 200 local student athletes, male and female, will be announced to represent their Baltimore area school and be honored, not only at the dinner in May, but during a special evening with the Baltimore Ravens, among other tributes.
McCormick will award more than $100,000 in Unsung Hero scholarships at its banquet including two grand prize winners, one male and one female, who will each receive a $40,000 Charles Perry McCormick college scholarship.
Last year, Dulaney’s Sean Herrin and Roland Park Country’s Liz Schlerf were the grand prize winners and Baltimore Ravens football legend Ray Lewis served as the keynote speaker.
The 2018 speaker has yet to be announced, but he or she is certain to be in the same category as the many outstanding individuals that have addressed the Unsung Heroes in the past. Just a sampling of that list includes NFL greats Peyton Manning, Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas and Roger Staubach; Olympians Jesse Owens, Mary Lou Retton and Cathy Rigby; media personalities such as Dick Vitale, James Brown and Irv Cross; noted coaches such as Don Shula, John Harbaugh and Brenda Frese; local legends Brooks Robison, Wes Unseld; and so many more too numerous to list.
