Milford Mill overcomes two weather suspensions and three trips up I-70 to claim season opening win over Tuscarora
The Milford Mill football team got quite familiar with I-70 this weekend, making three separate trips to Frederick for their opener with Tuscarora, before finally completing the contest on Monday morning. The sixth-ranked Millers made all the waiting and travel worth the effort, as they battled their way to a 20-14 victory.
The Millers, like most programs in the metro area, saw their scheduled season opener altered by the severe weather that hit the region on Friday. They actually began the contest on Friday and played all but 1:36 of the opening quarter before the contest was suspended. The teams resumed the game on Saturday and completed the first half, only to have more weather cause yet another suspension.
Working overtime on the laundry and healing up any bumps and bruises, the two teams convened again on Monday morning and finally completed the marathon effort.
Entering Monday’s action, the host Titans held an 11-7 lead. The Titans first score came when they recovered a fumble in the end zone as the team’s combined for four fumbles in a nine minute stretch during a driving downpour.
Tuscarora added a field goal and a safety on Saturday to hold their advantage, while Milford Mill got on the board with 45-yard touchdown pass from Richard Holmes to Octavius Strong. On Monday, the Millers took their first lead of the contest when Jordan Morant scored on a four-yard fourth down run, early in the third quarter. Tuscarora’s Ryan Barrick tied the game, 14-14, with his second field goal of the contest, but Milford Mill’s Tyree Sheppard responded with a 77-yard kickoff return for what proved to be the winning score.
Desmond Shell rushed for 119 yards on 22 carries to lead Milford Mill, helping Milford avenge a 38-14 loss to the Titans one year ago.
