Glenelg steams past No. 5 Howard for Elgard Trophy; Owens scores 4 TDs (VIDEO HERE!!)

The prestigious Elgard Trophy resides in the Glenelg High trophy case after the 11th-ranked Gladiators dismantled archrival and No. 5 Howard, 42-14, in western Howard County.
Yale University-bound running back Wande Owens rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns for Glenelg (2-0 overall and Howard), and returned an interception 95 yards for another score. Senior Tyler Reiff also had a pick-six and ran for a score.
The Gladiators dominated play in the second half against the four-time reigning HoCo champion Lions (1-1, 1-1 Howard), avenging a 34-0 loss a year ago. It was the 61st meeting between the two oldest schools in Howard County.
The game scheduled to be played on Friday night, but was postponed due to lighting.
The wait was more than worth it for Glenelg, which served a lightning size-strike on the HoCo football scene.
"We knew coming into (tonight’s game) we had to play physical. Howard is a great team, they’ve been a powerhouse the past 50 years. They’re always a top team," said Reiff. "We knew if we came out tough and played fast we could tire them out."
Owens was a big reason the Gladiators handed Howard just its two league loss in the last five seasons. The senior broke scoring runs of 82 and 72 yards in the second half.
Owens gave Glenelg the lead for good with a 13-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the first half. In the third, he got a handoff from Reiff, hit the sidelines and outran the Lion defense to the end zone.
After an Cleary interception and return, Reiff slipped into the end zone from two yards out, pushing Glenelg's advantage to 27-7 in the fourth. Reiff completed the Gladiators' big evening with a 38-yard interception return.
Owens, who capped his huge night with a 72-yard jaunt to make it 34-14, praised Glenelg's offensive line and receivers of doing a great job blocking and creating holes.
"We want to come out and prove to the rest of the county that we are a force to be reckoned with this season," said Owens, "and we did that by beating Howard tonight."
