Baltimore City champ Clippers complete campaign with state title; state champs Poly and Lake Clifton finish in Top 10

by Derek Toney

After winning a second state championship in three seasons, following a perfect run through the area's toughest public league, Patterson High is No. 1 in the final VSN Boys Basketball Top 20 for the 2018-19 season.

The Clippers (25-3) capped their season with victories over Wicomico and southern Maryland's Thomas Stone in the Class 2A Final Four at the University of the Maryland. The Baltimore City school didn't lose to an area school during the regular season, including victories over state champ Poly (3A) and Lake Clifton (1A) en route to the city title.

The Engineers, whose only area loss was to Patterson, finish No. 2 after winning a record third straight 3A title. St. Frances Academy, which swept the MIAA A and Baltimore Catholic League titles, is third. Edmondson and Mount St. Joseph round out the Top 5.

The second 5 includes New Town, Boys' Latin School, Dulaney, Lake Clifton and McDonogh School. New Town won the Baltimore County title while Boys' Latin School held the No. 1 ranking for two weeks. Dulaney reached its first state Final Four (4A) in 42 years and Lake Clifton became the first program to win state titles in all four classifications.

The MIAA A Conference placed six teams in the final poll, followed by Baltimore City with four. Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties, and the UCBAC each have two.
