Eagles fall to Patuxent in 1A state field hockey final

by Adrian Martin

Francis Scott Key's magical postseason ride came to an end Saturday. In their first state final in three decades, the Eagles dropped a 2-0 decision to southern Maryland's Patuxent at Washington College.

The Eagles (11-5 overall) rode a six-game winning streak into the championship contest after a tough regular season that saw them finish 1-5 in the competitive Carroll County league. After exorcising past disappointments in the region final, Francis Scott Key reached its first state final since Bill Clinton was President and Ray Lewis was in his rookie season with the Baltimore Ravens.

"It was a huge success," Eagles coach Lori Knights said. "As many years as it's been since field hockey, or any sport, reached the state finals, it was a great season, and we had a lot of support behind us from the community."

The speedy Panthers scored a goal in each half and dominated possession through most of the game.

"They had great stick work," Knights said of the Panthers. "We tried to lock them down as much as we could."

Francis Scott Key's best chance to score came midway through the first half, shortly after Patuxent's first goal. The Eagles got three penalty corners in less than 90 seconds but couldn't convert them into goals.

Eagle goalkeeper Kourtney Black was one of four seniors on the roster and finished with 10 saves. She emerged from the tough game with a smile.

"We lost, but it was a well-played game," she said. "This was a goal of mine for a very long time. It feels amazing just to have the opportunity to play in this game."
