After a tough first outing on the road in Washington last weekend, Carver Voc Tech’s football team return to the confines of west Baltimore looking to regain some confidence. The Bears did just that, knocking off Maritime Academy, 20-8, in a Baltimore City Division II contest Saturday.

Najee Fitzgerald and Elijah Hawkins provided touchdown runs for Carver (1-1, 1-0 in Division II), and senior Brian Brown recovered a fumble in the end zone for another touchdown. The Bears opened the season with a 48-0 loss to St. John’s (D.C.).

“I was little nervous,” said Carver coach Wayne Jackson. “They were a little down and questioning themselves. They have the ability, it’s just a matter of sharpen things.”

Carver went 6-5 last season, losing 19-18 to Forest Park in the Class 1A South Region playoffs. The Bears graduated 14 performers off the roster, but Jackson is leaning on Jonathan Rogers (TE/DE), Dwayne Winston (OT/DT), Sade Richardson (WR/DB) and Brown to get Carver back to the postseason.

The Bears play winless Southside Academy at Poly’s Lumsden-Scott Saturday afternoon.
