Calvert Hall played its first home soccer game in nearly three weeks, on Tuesday, as the Cardinals celebrated Senior Day with a 3-1 MIAA A Conference victory over visiting John Carroll.
The win, combined with Gilman’s 2-1, double-overtime win over McDonogh, left the battle for the top four seeds a puzzling mess. Calvert Hall (9-4-1, 8-4-1), remains in fourth place with 25 points, three back of Mount St. Joseph, which downed Archbishop Spalding 2-1 on Thursday, and McDonogh. St. Joe will visit Calvert Hall on Thursday night.
The stakes remain high as St. Joe still has a chance to climb all the way to the top seed, should Gilman and McDonogh falter in their final games. Both the Gaels and Cardinals have a shot at the second seed, which also provides a first round bye and a home game for the semifinals.
Against John Carroll (2-12-0, 2-11-0), all three goals were scored by team captains, Zach Wenger, Yianni Sarioglou and Justin Breidenstein. John Tune and Evan Connell each had assists for the Cardinals.
Shaun Ostrowski scored for John Carroll, which closes its season at home against Archbishop Curley, on Thursday.
