Defending MIAA A Conference champion Calvert Hall opened its 2020 baseball season at Carlo Crispino Stadium in Towson with a resounding 14-0 five-inning mercy-rule win over visiting Boys’ Latin on Wednesday afternoon.

Coach Lou Eckerl’s charges started fast with eight runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning before the Lakers recorded an out.

Lead-off hitter Chase Davalli lined the first pitch of the Hall season into left for a single, Sami Kahn plated Davalli with a booming triple off the base of right-center field fence (365-feet away), and the rout was on.

Janneul Wispi-Robles lead the Calvert Hall attack with a triple, double, and 3 RBI’s.

Jannuel Wispi-Robles lead a 12-hit Cardinal attack with a triple, double, three RBI’s and two runs scored. Davalli was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Antonio Barranca was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and he scored a run.

“We’ve been working real hard in the cages, and we have a very good offensive team,” said Wispi-Robles. “That big first inning for us gave us a confidence boost, right out of the gate.”

Three Hall pitchers, Alex Kahn, Scott Borgmann and Tyler Brown, held the Lakers to three hits, which included singles from TJ Windle and Jack Fishel, and a triple off the bat of Ian Mcaslan.

Mcaslan lead off the Laker fourth with a three-bagger to deep center, but he was stranded on third when Borgmann proceeded to strike out the side.

Borgmann notched the win for Eckerl, who will be gunning for his 9th A Conference crown this spring. The Cardinals travel to Archbishop Spalding, on Monday, to face the Cavaliers in their league opener.

Eckerl was pleased with the fast start against Boys’ Latin.

“We’re working hard and hitting well,” said Eckerl. “If our pitching comes around, we’ll be tough to beat this year.”

Wednesday’s win was number 489 in Eckerl’s illustrious career.

The Lakers will be competitive in the MIAA B Conference, where they have reached the conference championship game for three consecutive years. BL captured the “B” crown in 2017 and 2018 under coach Bill Greenwell, before falling to Gerstell Academy in last year’s title game.
