Undefeated Calvert Hall (7-0, 3-0) got four goals from Patrick Kelly and two from Stephen Kelly as they came from behind to beat Mount St. Joseph, 11-6, in MIAA A Conference lacrosse in Irvington on Tuesday.
The Gaels (1-5, 0-4) had a 5-2 lead with 21 seconds to go in the first half when they were victimized by an “own goal” that seemed to energize Calvert Hall.
Stephen Kelly, who won 17-of-19 draws, got two quick fast-break scores after the “own goal,” allowing Calvert Hall to tie the score at five at the half. Patrick Kelly got the first score of the second half to put the Cardinals ahead 6-5, and he tallied again with 1:26 to go in the third quarter to give the Cards a 7-5 lead.
The Mount got a goal from Tommy Hart with 30 seconds to go in the third quarter to bring the Gaels within one, but Calvert Hall would score four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Hall coach Bryan Kelly said that the “own goal” was caused by Hall pressure.
“Our kids were riding better, which we stress,” said Kelly.
Stephen Kelly agreed. “Our attack rode hard. We knew we had to do better than that.”
The Cavert Hall defense held the Mount to just one goal in the second half. Defenseman Evan Connell anchored the Hall “D”. Connell said that the Cardinals had to pack it in more in the second half, and they had to stop Kevin MacQuilliam, who scored four times for the Gaels on the day.
Coach Kelly said that his team did a better job of playing sound defense in the second half. “We settled down and started sliding bettter,” said Kelly.
Calvert Hall took a quick 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game before Tommy Hart cut the Cardinal lead in half at 7:26. From there, MacQuilliam scored four straight goals to give the Mount a 5-2 lead.
The unfortunate “own goal” that the Gaels surrendered turned the game around.
“We came out strong and got a big lead,” sad MacQuilliam. “We know that we can play with any team in this league now.”
