St. Frances look to make impression out west; Franklin and McDonogh set for Top 10 collision

The second full weekend of the area high school football season is upon us. The first matchup of VSN Top 10 teams and St. Frances Academy’s pursuit of the nation’s top-ranking highlights the slate.

Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.

Concordia Prep (2-0) at No. 12 Dundalk (1-0)

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

What you need to know: After winning its MIAA B Conference debut (defeated St. Paul’s School) in impressive fashion last weekend, Concordia Prep takes on one of Baltimore County’s best. Dundalk, which reached the Class 3A North Region final after claiming a share of Baltimore County’s Division I crown, is 12-2 in its last 14 regular season decisions (since 2017).


No. 5 Franklin (1-0) at No. 6 McDonogh School (2-0)

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

What you need to know: The first Top 10 showdown of 2019 features northwest Baltimore County powers meeting for the first time since 2016. Former longtime McDonogh coach Dom Damico returns to the Owings Mills private school as Franklin’s defensive coordinator.


Mervo, with running back Izyaah Shird (with ball), looks to improve to 2-0 when the eighth-ranked Mustangs host Poly at Modell Field.

No. 4 Archbishop Spalding (2-0) at Bullis School (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: After two blowout wins, Spalding faces its toughest challenge in a match of state Top 25 teams (Spalding is No. 5). Bullis (14th in state poll) is led by West Virginia commit David Okoli (wide receiver/defensive back) and running back/linebacker Myles Turner (committed to UMASS).


No. 20 Elkton (1-0) at Edgewood (1-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Edgewood begins defense of its UCBAC Chesapeake crown. Elkton, which reached the Class 2A state semifinals last season, will look to make its UCBAC Chesapeake title intentions known after losing, 35-14, last season.


No. 1 St. Frances Academy (3-0) vs. Mater Dei (3-0)

When: Saturday, 10:30 p.m.

Where: Don Bosco Prep (CA)

What you need to know: It’s East Coast vs. West Coast as the nation’s top two teams, according to MaxPreps, meet in the featured match of the California Trinity League vs. USA Showcase in Los Angeles. It will be the biggest match for the Panthers (No. 2 by MaxPreps; 4th by USA Today) since morphing into a national power.
