When legendary coach Lil Shelton retired in 2011, some wondered if Severna Park High’s field hockey dynasty would detioriate.

Well, the empire is still intact. The No. 10 Falcons routed Montgomery County’s Sherwood, 5-0, in a Class 4A state semifinal contest at Broadneck’s Lawrence E. Knight Stadium Monday night.

The Anne Arundel County school will play for a 21st state title Saturday afternoon at Washington College’s Kirby Field where they will play Wootton. The Montgomery County school defeated No. 11 Dulaney in the other semifinal in Cape St. Claire.

Outmatched on the stat sheet, the Lions’ guile kept its state final hopes alive for 100 minutes. But Alex Yokley’s goal on the final play off a penalty corner ended Dulaney’s season, 1-0.

Wootton (16-0 overall) outshot Dulaney (13-6), 10-2 and won the corner battle, 9-2, finally breaking through as Yokley gathered an entry pass from teammate Sarah Lee. Her shot deflected off the foot of Dulaney goalie Kalie Paranzino into the goal.

“Knowing Kalie she may think this loss is her fault, but it’s not, we win together and lose together, she played and unbelievable game,” said Dulaney coach Kellie Fialcowitz. “She had some great saves and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

The Lions wouldn’t had been in position to reach Washington College without Paranzino’s heroic. The junior made 15 saves as Dulaney’s defense kept Wootton in check.

The Timonium school couldn’t muster any offense. The Lions’ best opportunity came at the seven minute mark when Kati Williams got the ball Sarah Sprinkel a few feet in front of the cage, but Wootton swarmed the Lion forward.

“This game could have gone either way, we just couldn’t finish,” said Fialcowitz. “We got a regional championship and a county championship and I couldn’t be more proud of the girls.”

The Falcons (13-3-1) continued their impressive postseason run as junior Olivia Reiter had two goals and an assist. Maeve Doherty, Lauren Duvall and Eva Klaus each tallied.

Doherty opened the flood gates with a strike into the left side of the cage 16 minutes into the game. Duvall and Klaus followed with scores as the Falcons built a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

Reiter, who’s committed to the University of Maryland, scored twice in a span of 15 minutes in the second half. Emily Mata needed to two saves to post a third shutout in as many postseason games.

Saturday’s finals’ trip will be Severna Park’s 26th. The Falcons, who won the 2011 4A crown in what would be Shelton’s final game, lost to eventual state champ and league rival South River in  last year’s East Region finals.

“They have been very driven this year, we live and die by our senior leadership, they wanted this and they are so excited to be back in the state championship,” said Severna Park coach Ann Andrews.
