Broadneck High football team believe defense will be its meal ticket back to the state postseason in 2010. In its season opener with rival Severna Park Saturday, Bruins’ defense didn’t disappoint.
The offense, however, was a different story. No. 6 Bruins posted a 27-7 decision in an Anne Arundel County contest.
Ronnie Van Meter rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for Broadneck (1-0 overall, 1-0 Anne Arundel), and James Mullis and Trae Byes each added a scoring run. Connor Wells threw for a 65-yard touchdown pass to Zach Buckon for Severna Park’s only touchdown.
The Falcons (0-1, 0-1) managed only 115 yards against Broadneck, which got a defensive score, courtesy of a forced fumble by Brooks Wiggan. Dominique Spence scooped up the ball and went 34 yards to the end zone.
The Bruins gained 268 yards, but their cause was hurt with three first half fumbles. Receiver Darnell Solomon caught two balls for 48 yards for Broadneck, which host Meade Friday evening.
Severna Park travels to No. 5 Arundel, which is coming off a huge victory over No. 2 and defending Class 4A state champ Old Mill.
