With all the knowledge of how serious head injuries can be, Archbishop Curley coach Gregg Kessler is not taking any chances with his two wresters, Vince Scarinzi and Brett Brigman, pulling both from the Ray Oliver Tournament in its second day.
Brigman’s exit from the tournament came in his quarterfinal match-up with McDonogh’s Max Satloff, when Brigman collapsed on the mat less than a minute into the bout.
Possibly sustaining a head to his chin, Brigman fell to his knees after being whipped around by Satloff’s attempt at a takedown, and went face-first into the mat with his eyes closed.
Brigman did come to just seconds after the incident and wanted to finish the match, but 30-year veteran and head official Dick Schmertzler, called the bout after speaking with the referee.
Scarinizi, suffering a head injury late last year which halted his 2010 finish, complained of dizziness following his 4-2 overtime quarterfinal loss to McDonogh’s Logan Meister, and was also pulled from the tournament.
Kessler said the two wrestlers should be alright and is just taking precautions. He is hopeful that the two wrestlers will be competing in next weekend’s War on the Shore in Wicomico, Md.
