After his team’s victory over Calvert Hall College Friday evening, Boys’ Latin School lacrosse coach Bob Shriver told his troops in the post-game huddle to relish playing a rare night game in front of a spirited audience.

The way the Lakers are playing right now, they’ll be under the lights at Unitas Stadium in a few weeks. No. 1 Boys’ Latin defeated the third-ranked Cardinals, 13-7, in MIAA A Conference action at Russo Stadium in Towson.

University of Maryland-bound attack Colin Heacock had four goals and three assists for the undefeated Lakers, and junior Shack Stanwick added three goals and handed out a pair of assists. Stephen Kelly and Tim Kelly each scored twice to lead Calvert Hall.

The Lakers (15-0 overall, 6-0 MIAA A), the consensus No. 1 squad in the nation, ran off five unanswered goals in the opening half then methodically pulled away from the defending league champ Cardinals in the second half. Boys’ Latin, which has won five of its first league six matches by five goals or more, appears to be on the fast track to the top-seed for next month’s playoffs.

Though the Lakers said Friday wasn’t a statement game, they were completely engaged in a front of the huge crowd on LaSalle Road.

“It was awesome. The crowd was unbelievable,” said Heacock. “All the students and the fans coming out to support you, you just want to go out there and play your best.”

“I think this is the first regular season Baltimore game we ever played at night,” said Shriver. “We’ve played in Annapolis at night, but we never played in Baltimore at night that wasn’t a playoff game. We tried to emphasize how neat and unique that is.”

Down 2-1 in the first quarter, Heacock scored a pair of unassisted scores in the final seconds of the period to give Boys’ Latin the lead. After a stop by senior goalie Christian Knight, the Lakers tacked on three more scores, capped with two unassisted strikes by Stanwick for a 6-2 advantage late in the first half.

Shriver said Knight’s save helped establish the tone the rest of the evening for the Lakers.

“It was a great shot and a fantastic save,” said Shriver. “I don’t know if it was the play of the game, because there was still a lot of time left, but it was a great play.”

“They hit me with a couple of shots early, so I was lucky,” said Knight, who had eight saves. “You hear the sideline react to a save, and it’s a big confidence booster for me and the whole team.”

The Lakers received two goals each from junior midfielder Tally Bruno and sophomore attack Devin Shewell. Boys’ Latin did a better job on faceoffs in the second half (won 8-5) after losing nine of 10 to Calvert Hall’s Stephen Kelly in the opening 24 minutes.

The Cardinals got within 8-6 after a goal by Johnny Kelly with 2 minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the third, but the Lakers won the ensuing faceoff and Heacock found Bruno for a 9-6 advantage. Bruno opened the final quarter with his second tally and Stanwick, who’s committed to Johns Hopkins University, made it 11-6 with 8:31 left in regulation.

“We wanted to get revenge and that’s what we did,” said Stanwick, whose team lost to Calvert Hall in the league semifinals at the U last spring. “I thought we played an awesome game.”

Loyola University-bound attack Jordan Germershausen had a goal and two assists for the Cardinals (7-5, 3-3 MIAA A), who’ve dropped three straight league decisions for the first time since 2010. Senior defender and co-captain Garrett Epple said inconsistency has plagued them.

“We haven’t put together a complete game on offense or defense,” said Epple, one of just three starters back from last spring’s title squad. “We’re running a lot of freshman, sophomores and juniors.

BL is very good. We know them pretty well and they’re a good team. Our goal is now to make it to playoffs and hopefully we’ll see them again.”
