Karey’s gem leads three time defending champion Lakers
Third-seeded Boys’ Latin had to wait an extra day to begin its quest for a fourth straight MIAA B Conference baseball title, but the Lakers stayed on track with a 4-0 opening round playoff win over Annapolis Area Christian, in a game that was played at Calvert Hall on Saturday afternoon after being postponed by rain on Friday.
Liam Karey pitched a complete game four-hitter and struck out seven to lead the Lakers, who advance to Monday’s second round where they will face second-seeded St. Vincent Pallotti at Blandair Park in Columbia (3:30 p.m.).
BL got things started in the second inning. After a walk to Ian McAslan, Eric Gazin stroked an RBI double to right-center. Gazin then scored on a single by JT Windle. BL scored again in the fifth on an RBI single by Charlie Godin, and finished out the scoring in he sixth with an unearned run.
AACS left-hander Andrew Sowinski was tough on Laker batters, striking out 11 on the day and allowing only five hits, but BL was able to get the clutch hits it needed them.
However, the day belonged to Karey and the Lakers. Monday’s other winner’s bracket game will feature 4th-seeded Gerstell at top-seeded Glenelg Country. The Dragons had a first round bye, while Gerstell defeated Mount Carmel, 11-1, on Friday.
The tournament’s first elimination game will also take place on Monday, as AACS will travel to Mount Carmel as both clubs attempt to extend their seasons.
