Boys’ Latin was 10-0 in MIAA B Conference regular season play in 2009, before falling to Archbishop Spalding in the league championship game, but the Lakers appear poised make another title run after opening the 2010 campaign with an impressive 34-0 shutout of St. Mary’s, Friday night in Annapolis.

The BL defense was outstanding, led by Greg Pyke who picked off a pair of passes, returning one 99 yards for a touchdown.  Pyke is not a little, quick defensive back making those plays.  He is a massive 6-foot-6, 305 pound interior lineman with speed that has college recruiters drooling.

“He [Pyke] can run.  That is why he is a major D1 recruit,” said Boys’ Latin coach Ritchie Schell of his defensive back who also contributed four tackles in the shutout.

BL’s big plays were not limited to the defense.  Senior Jeff Chase returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score on special team, while Mike Turner had four receptions for 80 yards and also added an interception.

The Laker running game was led by Brandon Barnes, who had 15 carries for 83 yards and one score.

Next Friday, the Lakers will play their home opener as they host Archbishop Curley.  St. Mary’s will look to rebound as they visit St. Paul’s, also on Friday afternoon.
