In a tightly contested game, host St. John’s Catholic Prep gave the visiting Beth Tfiloh all it could handle, on Thursday, but Warriors were able to escape Frederick with a 2-0 MIAA C Conference soccer victory.

St. John’s seemed to have scored first midway through the first half off a great cross and header, but the goal was called back for offsides.  After the early chance for the Vikings, Beth Tfiloh began to turn the game around, creating dangerous chances off of possession in the final third.  With just two minutes to go in the first half, Beth Tfiloh’s Yaniv Yaffe made a quick move in the box and was fouled as a result.  Ben Lipowitz stepped up and slotted home the penalty shot for the 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Warriors were able to create chances, but St. John’s defended resolutely, determined to keep the score close and try to equalize.  Beth Tfiloh ultimately was able to find the second goal as Eli Pottash finished off Dean Kaplan’s corner kick, 23 minutes into the second half.  St. John’s still did not quit, and the Vikings created several dangerous chances off corner kicks down the stretch, but the game ended 2-0.
