Earlier this month the Big 10 Conference announced its post-season soccer awards and Calvert Hall graduate Ben Bender was named 2021 Big 10 Midfielder of the Year.
Bender, a sophomore, led the conference with 21 points during the 2021 season. His 8 goals were tied for first in the league and he was a unanimous selection for the award.
In addition, Bender was named 1st-Team All-Big 10, as was senior defender Brett St. Martin, a graduate of Mount St. Joseph.
St. Martin, the son of Mount St. Joseph coach Mike St. Martin, was a three-year starter for the Terps and the team-captain this fall, as well as a contributor to Maryland’s 2018 national championship squad.
Also of note in the Big 10 honors is the league’s Offensive Player of the Year Peter Mangione. Mangione went to Dulaney High School, but did not play high school soccer, instead playing for the Baltimore Armour Academy. He tied for second in the Big 10 with three game winning goals. He is the son of former Calvert Hall standout Sam Mangione.
