After falling to No. 5 Mount St. Joseph during the holidays at the Benedictine Tournament in Richmond, Va., Calvert Hall hosted the Gaels on Wednesday in Towson and pulled off a 39-38 upset.

Calvert Hall knocked off a heavily favored St. Joe team in last year’s Baltimore Catholic League Tournament championship game and, although many of the key faces have changed for both teams, this outcome was just as surprising.

The game winner came from a layup by Justin Beck with just 1.8 seconds left in the contest.

Calvert Hall, which has won four straight to improve to 10-9, jumped out to quick start as the Cardinals led 14-5 at the end of one quarter.  From there, both teams played tenacious defense and the Cardinals stayed in front, leading 31-21 heading into the final quarter.

In the final period, St. Joe finally found so momentum and battled its way to a 38-37 lead when David Windsor scored the final two points in a 17-point performance.
