When opposing teams square off with No. 6 Milford Mill, they know that senior captains Tevin Hanner and Colgate-bound Isaiah McCray are the Millers’ top returning players from last year’s Class 3A state championship team.
But Milford Mill has shown this season that the supporting cast around Hanner and McCray are just as talented. On Thursday night against host New Town, no single player reached double figures, however, eleven different Millers scored in a 64-47 victory.
“That’s the way we play the game. If you’ve followed us over the years, you’ll understand that everybody contributes to what we do. And I believe that is why we’re successful,” said Milford Mill coach Al Holley.
He added: “You can’t come into the game saying that you can stop Isaiah, we’ll win or if you stop Tevin, we’ll win. You really have to shut us down as a team. That’s the way I coach it and that’s the way we play it.”
Seniors Duane Miller, Nick Smoot, Troy Parker and McCray led the Millers (7-1) with nine points each. Hanner and junior forward Katrell Myers both scored eight points.
Davonte Coleman did his best the keep the Titans (7-2) in the contest, scoring a game-high 18 points. Jaylin Clarke added eight points, while Tyler Charles, Melcolm Brown and Jerrod Lemon all chipped in five points apiece.
Milford Mill’s tough defense held New Town’s leading scorer Tavon Geter scoreless before he fouled out late in the game.
A jumper by Coleman gave the Titans an early 12-10 lead with 2:33 left in the first quarter.
It would be the last lead for the Owings Mills school as the Millers went on a 24-4 run over the next seven minutes that began with a three-pointer by Smoot and was capped with a put-back by Tanner. Milford pushed out to a 34-16 halftime advantage.
Trailing by 21 points late in the third, New Town tried to rally with a 10-0 run that included back-to-back buckets by Brown but it was too late. The Millers had put too much distance between themselves and the Titans.
Milford Mill will host Baltimore County 3A/4A rival Hereford on Monday, while New Town will play a non-league game when they host Oakdale, also on Monday.
