Welcome to Varsity Sports Network’s 2010 preseason Top 20 wrestling poll.  VSN ranks the top teams in the Baltimore region which covers public and private schools in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Cecil County, Harford County and Howard County.

1. Archbishop Spalding

Wrestler to watch: KK Smith, Sr., 189 pounds
Takedown: Cavaliers return strong roster from light to heavyweight.

2. St. Paul’s School

Wrestler to watch: Eric Friedman, Jr., 119

Takedown: Crusaders under the radar in MIAA B, will turn heads with experienced leaders.

3. McDonogh School

Wrestler to watch: Jack Clark, Fr., 125

Takedown:  Eagles look to regain MIAA crown

4. Mount. St. Joseph

Wrestler to watch: Tyler Rill, Jr., 171

Takedown:  Defending MIAA titlist Gaels will be a force to be reckoned with at MIAA’s and Maryland Independent Schools tourney.

5. Glenelg

Wrestler to watch: Nick Cafferey, Sr., 130

Takedown: Gladiators are hungry after losing in Class 1A/2A state finals title last season.

6. Archbishop Curley

Wrestler to watch: Brett Przywara, Sr., 130

Takedown: One of the best MIAA dual-meet teams; have nine returning lettermen from squad that knocked off five area-ranked teams last winter.

7. Owings Mills

Wrestler to watch: Warren Mack, Jr., 112

Takedown: Eagles will be back in 2A/1A state dual meet hunt after dominating Baltimore County last year.
 

8. Old Mill

Wrestler to watch: Ron Vaughters, Sr., 145

Takedown: Patriots will again be a force in Anne Arundel County.

9. Loyola Blakefield

Wrestler to watch: David Mohler, So., 103

Takedown: Despite hit hard by graduation, Dons will be factor in MIAA.

10. John Carroll

Wrestler to watch: Mathew Miller, Sr., 160

Takedown: Patriots, last year’s MIAA runner-up, finally can take the tough tournaments it enrolls in with talent mixed throughout lineup.

11. Reservoir

Wrestler to watch: Mark Colabucci, Sr., 152

Takedown: Gators lost nucleus from state 4A/3A championship team, but will be in contention for Howard County championship.

12. Rising Sun

Wrestler to watch: Adam Heffelfinger, Sr., 119

Takedown: Ready to challenge Bel Air and Harford Tech for UCBAC supremacy.

13. River Hill

Wrestler to watch: Cameron Kirby, Sr., 125

Takedown: Coach Brandon Lauer will have Hawks fighting for Howard County supremacy.

14. Towson

Wrestler to watch: Jesse Garrett, Jr., 135

Takedown: Generals bring back five state qualifiers.

15. Harford Tech

Wrestler to watch: Joey Malanga, Sr., 145

Takedown: Cobras look to return to glory with experienced starters.

16. Arundel

Wrestler to watch: Tyler Goodwin, Jr., 135

Takedown: Wildcats return five Anne Arundel County finalists.

17. Hammond

Wrestler to watch: Jonathan Goodwin, Jr., 145

Takedown: Bears could be a darkhorse in Howard Countylineup, with the right circumstances and match-ups could upset other Howard County teams.

18. Bel Air

Wrestler to watch: Tom Kuegler, Sr. 189

Takedown: Three-time defending UCBAC champs said goodbye to a group of seniors last year, but still have power and successful JV.

19. Wilde Lake

Wrestler to watch: Alex Polonsky, Jr., 112

Takedown: Wildecats will be solid in tough Howard County race.

 20. Hereford

Takedown: Good team with a solid run at regional title in 2010.
