Thornton and Wilkens combine for 222 receiving yards and five scores
Mount St. Joseph quarterback Billy Atkins did not throw for a touchdown on every pass he completed, Friday at Gilman, but it sure seemed like it.
The talented junior did complete 17-of-26 attempts for 307 yards and a stunning seven touchdowns to lead the Gaels to a 56-6 rout of the host Greyhounds in MIAA A Conference action.
St. Joe (5-1 overall, 2-0 MIAA A) started quick against the outmanned Greyhounds, as Atkins threw three first quarter touchdown passes, all to fellow junior Dont’e Thornton, Jr. The scores went for 45, 18 and 49 yards.
Leading 21-0, the Gaels got two more TD tosses from Atkins to start the second quarter, a 12-yard completion to Tyler Wilkens and a 9-yard flip to Semaj Henson. Senior running back Marlowe Wax then added a 17-yard TD run to push the St. Joe lead to 40-0.
At the end of the first half, Gilman did get on the scoreboard with a 19-yard pass from Matt Parker to Rayuan Lane Lane, but that would prove to be the hounds only high light.
In the third quarter, Atkins tacked on his final two touchdown throws, a 14-yard throw to Wilkens and a 3-yard pass to Andre Crawley.
Thornton and Wilkens both had more than 100 yards receiving, with 122 and 107, respectively and Wax led the ground with 84 yard on nine carries.
Gilman is now 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.
