Wildcats will battle Broadneck in regional final; Bruins advance with win at Leonardtown

Unranked Arundel High surprised No. 12 Meade, the top seed in the Class 4A East Region Section I boys soccer state playoff bracket, Thursday, with a 3-2 win in overtime.

Chris Koennel delivered the golden goal with just one second left in overtime as he put away a pass from Mike Magorka.

Magorka scored Arundel’s first goal, with an assist from Spencer Hanks, but Meade rallied to take a 2-1 on tallies from Silas Baker and Caleb Pritchett. The Mustangs, however, failed on their bid to put the game away in regulation when they missed a penalty kick.

With the door open Hanks got the equalizer, with an assist from Justin Taschenberger, for the Wildcats.

Broadneck had to go on the road to St. Mary’s County to face Leonardtown in its playoff game and the Bruins prevailed 2-1.

Ethan Romito led the offense with a goal and an assist and Kyle Waggoner also scored, while Connor Yeager netted Leonardtown’s goal.

In the nets, John Vaaler had seven saves for the Bruins, who outshot their opponents 10-8.

Broadneck will host Arundel Tuesday for the 4A East title and a spot in the state final four.
