Loyola Blakefield, the defending MIAA water polo champion, opened the 2010 season with a resounding, 23-5, win over Gilman on Tuesday afternoon at Blakefield.

The Dons got six goals from junior Kendrick McDonald and five from senior Michael Feihe, as nine different players scored. Loyola had a 4-0 lead just three minutes into the game.

The Dons held a 15-3 lead at the half.  Senior Oliver Bennett had two goals and six assists, and senior Kevin Balhoff had three goals and four assists.

Loyola was coming off a highly successful weekend at the Philmore Cup, held Episcopal Academy in Pennsylvania, where they were undefeated.

“We were really proud of the results up there,” said coach Keith Schertle. “We’re extremely happy withy this year’s team.  We play a better offensive game then we played last year, and we play better team defense.”

Fred Sutter had four goals for Gilman.

The Dons will play Calvert Hall on October 23 at Blakefield.  The Hall won nine straight A conference crowns before Loyola copped the title last season.
