St. Frances welcomes national power to Charm City; Mount St. Joseph and McDonogh set for Top 3 showdown

Baltimore will be the center of the national high school football universe as the seventh week of the area football season commences Thursday.

Friday evening at Morgan State University’s Hughes Stadium, No. 1 St. Frances Academy takes on Florida’s IMG Academy in a matchup of the nation’s elite teams. IMG is ranked 3rd nationally by USA Today and MaxPreps.

Locally, there’s two Top 20 matchups including a battle for the top spot in the MIAA A Conference.  Baltimore City, Baltimore County and UCBAC leagues take the field on Thursday.

Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.

McClain Butler, Nate Kent and Michael Spitz has led Liberty to four consecutive victories after a 0-2 start. The Lions play at South Carroll Friday evening.

South River (6-0) at Broadneck (3-3)

When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

What you need to know: The Seahawks (5-0 Anne Arundel County) look to take a step toward the Anne Arundel championship. Broadneck (3-2 Anne Arundel), which lost to South River as the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A East Region playoffs, has won the past two Anne Arundel crowns.


IMG Academy (7-0) vs. St. Frances Academy (6-1) 

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Morgan State University

What you need to know: The Panthers get another chance against one of the nation’s elite programs. The Florida powerhouse, ranked 3rd in USA Today’s Super 25, feature the nation’s top cornerback in LSU commit Elias Ricks, Clemson commit Demonte Capehart (defensive line), Ohio State commit Lejond Cavazos (defensive back) and wide receiver Michael Redding (Miami).

Drew Stoka will try to keep Glenelg undefeated in Howard County play when the Gladiators visit 16th-ranked River Hill Friday evening.

No. 19 John Carroll School (4-2) vs. No. 14 St. Mary’s (4-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Pascal Field, Annapolis

What you need to know: Second-place in the MIAA B Conference is at stake. The two-time defending champ Saints (4-1 MIAA B) have won the last three meetings over the Patriots (4-1 MIAA B) by a combined 102-27.


Glenelg (4-2) at No. 16 River Hill (5-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Glenelg (3-0 Howard) looks to win its 17th straight against Howard County competition including playoffs. River Hill (5-1 Howard), the last HoCo team to beat the Gladiators, has its previous three seasons ended by Glenelg in the playoffs.

St. Frances, with Jordan Toles (left), Chris Braswell and Blake Corum have another tough national challenge Friday. The top-ranked Panthers play Florida’s IMG Academy, ranked 3rd nationally by USA Today and MaxPreps, at Morgan State University’s Hughes Stadium.

When: Saturday, 1 p.m.

What you need to know: The top spot in the MIAA A Conference will be at stake. Mount St. Joseph (2-0 MIAA A) has won the last two meetings, including a 34-30 victory last season over the Eagles (1-0 MIAA A).
