Gladiators return while Panthers make first appearance in several seasons; Mount St. Joseph moves to No. 3

by Derek Toney
With another alum leading the way, Annapolis High is off to a promising start. The Panthers have a spot in the latest VSN Football Top 20.
Annapolis, under DeWayne Hunt, are 3-1 and ranked No. 19 (first VSN ranking since 2017) after winning at previously undefeated and 18th-ranked Severna Park last Friday. Hunt, a 1999 Annapolis grad who was a volunteer coach at the Naval Academy succeeded Nick Good-Malloy, a 2001 grad who was VSN Football Coach of the Year in 2016 and guided the Panther football program for nine seasons.
Annapolis hosts No. 7 Broadneck, Friday evening in the state capital.
Glenelg has a second tour in this year’s Top 20 after handing then-No. 20 Oakland Mills its first loss. St. Frances Academy, which posted a solid victory at California prep school stronghold De La Salle, is again No. 1
Spalding, Mount St. Joseph, Calvert Hall College and McDonogh School make the remainder of the Top 5. Mount St. Joseph is up to No. 3 (was 4th last week) after outlasting McDonogh School. Concordia Prep advances from 19th to No. 18.
In addition to Annapolis/Broadneck, there’s another Top 20 match in Annapolis Friday evening as No. 4 Calvert Hall takes on 15th-ranked St. Mary’s at Pascal Field. Saturday morning, No. 17 Loyola welcomes fifth-ranked McDonogh.
