The Howard County Times reported today that Glenelg standout Alyssa Parker has given a verbal commitment to play field hockey at the University of Maryland.

“It’s not like I’m relieved that I don’t have to worry about it anymore. I’m relieved because I know I made the right choice for me. It’s not like I got it over with just for the sake of getting it over. I picked a good one,” she told the publication.

Parker was selected as the inaugural Varsity Sports Network Field Hockey Player of the Year (click link to view story).  She also earned that same honor from The Baltimore Sun and Washington Post as well as being selected to the All-State field hockey team.

The junior midfielder scored 38 goals and added 38 assists this season for the area’s top-ranked team.

She led the Gladiators to the program’s first state title a few weeks back with a 2-1 victory over Century;  Parker assisted on both goals scored in that game.

Two weeks ago, she told VSN that she was “torn” between Maryland and the University of North Carolina.  In the end, she chose to stay close to home and play for the defending NCAA national champion Terps in 2012.
