Poly High football coach Roger Wrenn said his team far from perfect, but the end results continue to be just that. The eighth-ranked Engineers posted their third straight rout to start the season, a 48-6 decision over Lake Clifton in a Baltimore City Division I match at Lumsden-Scott Stadium Friday evening.
Senior running back Gabriel Ali-El rushed for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Engineers (3-0, 2-0 Division I), and quarterback Darrell Milburn completed 9 of 14 for 144 yards. Jamal Chappell added a scoring run and a 55-yard punt return for another score.
The Engineers raced out to a 36-6 halftime lead as the defending co-Division I champs have outscored their first three opponents, 150-31.
“We have some problems,” said Wrenn. “We’re not perfect by any imagination.”
The Engineers scored 22 points in the first quarter as Ali-El (five yards), Chappell (seven) and Milburn (28) had scoring runs. Chappell, a junior, took a Laker punt return and went 55 yards for his second touchdown of the evening.
Gregory Harrell got Lake Clifton on the scoreboard with an eight-yard run before Ali-El broke for a 51-yard touchdown run, sending Poly into the locker room with a 30-point lead. Milburn threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Riley in the final quarter, and reserve Jordan Garrison closed the scoring with an 8-yard run.
“We were just dominant,” said Wrenn. The Engineers’ defense got solid performances from Wilford Deshield-Lynch (10 tackles) and senior linebacker Stacy Stovall (nine tackles and quarterback sack).
The Engineers head to No. 14 Patterson, Wrenn’s former team, for a key Division I match Friday afternoon. They followed with No. 3 Calvert Hall College and Edmondson.
“We’ll find out what we’re made of,” said Wrenn.
