It was the classic match-up of an emerging power trying to rock the establishment, as No. 13 Calvert Hall hosted No. 4 Mount St. Joseph in a thrilling MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic League basketball game, Wednesday in Towson.

Calvert Hall came in unbeaten and determined to prove itself against the mighty Gaels, but senior Jaylen Adams turned in a big overtime to help St. Joe turn back the Cards, 62-57.

With the game tied at 49, after four quarters, Adams got the Gaels rolling with a three-pointer at the start of OT and added three more hoops to help St. Joe race to a 13-8 advantage in the extra session.

The nine points topped Adams’ total from regulation, allowing him to finish with 14 for the game.   Phil Booth paced the Gaels (6-1, 3-1, 2-1) 19 hard-earned points, while Jordan McNeil added 13 and Daveyon Barnes added 13.

St. Joe also help its cause incredibly with a perfect  17-for-17 effort from the free throw line.

Calvert Hall (6-1, 2-1, 1-1) was led by junior Nico Clareth’s game-high 20 points.  Clareth led a second quarter surge in which the Cardinals led by as many seven points.  However, St. Joe rallied to tie the contest at the half, 26-26.

The Gaels drive continued into the second half and they went by six after three quarters, 44-38.  The final quarter, however, largely belonged to the Cardinals, who rallied behind Clareth and Drew Edwards, who finished with 13 points.

Clareth tied the game, with 2:28 to play, but neither team scored again in regulation.
