Class 3A North Region championship

Aberdeen (9-2) at North Harford (9-2)

Last week: Aberdeen defeated Franklin, 32-20; North Harford defeated Digital Harbor, 36-6

Outlook: A pair of UCBAC rivals meet for the 3A North Region title. The Hawks gained a second straight region final trip last weekend against Digital Harbor.

The No. 13 Hawks’ punishing ground game proved too much for the Baltimore City squad as Eric Bayer scored two touchdowns and Jon Hammer rushed for 76 yards and a score. The Pylesville school gained 269 yards on the ground.

No. 11 Aberdeen ended a seven-year postseason drought with a second half showing against 2010 3A state finalist Franklin. Chavez Cheatham, Austin Bonsall and Kenny Faulcon scored in the final 20 minutes as the Eagles won their first playoff game since the 2004 2A East Region semifinals.

Just 1-9 a year ago, new Aberdeen coach Johnny Brooks, who guided Havre de Grace to the Class 1A state finals last year, has the school a win away from its first state semifinals since winning the 2003 2A state crown.  Aberdeen started 2010 at 4-0 before North Harford posted a 38-12 decision.

Ryan Stinar ran for two scores and threw a 16-yard score to Nick Tittle as the Hawks rolled more than 300 yards on the ground. Their defense stymied the Eagles’ offense, sacking Faulcon six times.

North Harford is seeking its first region championship. Last year, the Hawks lost to Franklin, 28-21, on a touchdown by quarterback Joey Dorsey (now at LaSalle University) with eight seconds left in regulation.
