Old Mill and South River share Anne Arundel County Wrestling Tournament championship

Wrestlers are not much on sharing, especially when it comes to championships, but the squads from Old Mill and South River had to settle for title divided as the tied for the team championship of the Anne Arundel County Tournament, this weekend at Arundel High School.

The tie may have been just a little sweeter for South River, which staged a big rally in the final rounds to pull even and the Seahawks have now won or shared the crown in three of the last four year, while Old Mill came away with a partial defense of the title it won a year ago.

South River, which placed second in the 4A state duals last week, had three individual champions, as Mason Smith (106), ranked 14th in the state, No. 7 Trenton Puccinelli (160) and No. 3 Ka’Ron Jones (285) reached the top of the podium. Puccinelli’s win the finals was especially big as it was a major decision, 8-0, over Old Mill’s Nehemiah Carter.

The Seahawks also got a second place effort from No. 11 Isaac Barber (120), who was defeated by Old Mill’s No. 12 Ryheam Tull, 7-1.

In addition to Tull, the Patriots received an individual championship from No. 20 Levi Garren (170). Carter was joined with a second place medal by teammate Damion Mansapit (126).

Third-place North County (170 points) received a title from Deshawn Madison (220), while Broadneck, which finished seventh as a team, had the most individual title winners with three. Claiming crowns for the Bruins were No. 12 Nick Schardt (132), No. 22 Michael Garlington (138) and Kyle Keller (152).

Fourth-place Southern received a title from Andrew Ruel (113) and sixth-place Severna Park placed Ron Schilpp (182) and No. 25 Ty Broadway (195) at the top of the podium. The other individual champions were No. 17 Caleb Chaves (126) from Arundel and Victor Listorti (145) from Chesapeake.
