Overlea Falcons

Coach: Craig Rollins

2011 record: 12-1

Returning starters: 13

Key returning players: Dequan Pettway, Sr., wide receiver/defensive back; Austin Newcomb, Jr., inside linebacker/offensive line; Onaje Bullen, Sr, defensive back; Ashantee Washington, Sr., wide receiver/defensive back; Bryant Tisdale, Sr., offensive/defensive line

Key newcomers: Ibn Moore, Jr., quarterback; Daquan Owens, Jr., offensive/defensive line; Tyrone Dennis, So., slot receiver; Alan Horst, Sr., kicker; Willie Jackson, Sr., wide receiver/cornerback; Ishmel McFadden, Sr., linebacker

Outlook: The Falcons enjoyed a huge 2011 campaign, reaching state semifinals for the first time since 1992. Overlea is the prohibitive favorite in the Baltimore County 1A/2A league.

Pettway, an all-league selection last fall, is one of the county’s best athletes, and will play receiver full-time after playing mostly quarterback last fall. Rollins is looking for Moore to progress behind center during the season.

The Falcons will be improved on the frontline with Tisdale (6-foot-3, 285 pounds) and Owens (6-3, 300) complimenting an assortment of skill weapons. They’ll be in deep in the secondary with Tisdale and Newcomb anchoring the line and linebacking corps, respectively.

“We have some kids who didn’t play last year who will slide into positions,” said Rollins, entering his third season at the Kenwood Avenue school.
Overlea starts 2012 with league contenders Owings Mills and New Town. The Falcons have won 14 consecutive regular season matches, dating back to the 2010 season.

“We’re building as a program,” said Rollins. “We had 40 kids in the weight room during the offseason conditioning. They understand what the expectations are.”
