On a day it was expected to struggle, host Mount St. Joseph wanted to pull a few surprises on Gilman, as the two squared off in Irvington for a late October MIAA A Conference football clash.  To this end, the Gaels opened the game with an onsides kick, but the Greyhounds recovered it and quickly proved nothing would catch them off guard this day.

On its first offensive snap, Gilman displayed a very familiar site, Darius Jennings racing for a 55-yard touchdown.  Gilman would go on to score 28 points in the opening quarter and 21 more in the second period to build a 49-0 halftime lead and they would go on to secure the 100th career win for head coach Biff Poggi, in a 49-14 victory.

Poggi broke Sherm Bristow’s school record of 99 wins on an day when the Gilman offense was unstoppable. Jennings finished with 134 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, and CJ Jones added 102 yards on seven carries and three TD’s.  One of Jones’ scores came on a 72 yard punt return.

Gilman, which was off last week, was coming off of a 63-7 win over Loyola their last time out.

Linn Worthington had two interceptions for the Greyhounds, who played a near perfect game on a near perfect fall day.

Sophomore Trevor Wey made 7-for-7 conversion attempts. Wey is 33-of-35 on his extra point attempts this season.

As a tribute to coach Poggi, VarsitySportsNetwork.com interviewed seven Gilman assistant coaches, including Bristow, and three players, in addition to Biff on his day in the sun. Also, video clips of all seven Gilman TD’s are available here.
