Severn, Mount de Sales and Maryvale Prep also prevail in IAAM B Conference tournament

No. 18 St. Paul’s School for Girls started its IAAM B Conference field hockey playoff run with an exhilarating, 3-2, overtime victory over Annapolis Area Christian, in a quarterfinal playoff game, Monday in Brooklandville.

The Gators got on the board early in the first half, at the 22:30 mark, when junior Kerrigan Rogers fed senior Natalie Bray for a score and a 1-0 lead. Later in the second half, junior Kelsey Jones knocked in a hard shot on a corner play. SPSG controlled most of the first half and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw even play with both teams making runs at each other’s goals. Lexi Steele got the Eagles on the board with about 11 minutes to play and then assisted on the game-tying score by Maggie Stallings, off a penalty corner, with one minute left in regulation.

In 7v7 sudden victory OT, the game again went back-and-forth and both teams worked hard to gain an advantage. About 8 minutes into OT, the Gators junior captain Leighton Eber intercepted an Eagles pass and quickly dribbled the ball up the field dodging a defender to make a hard long pass to a streaking junior Caroline Pearce, who controlled the ball in front of the cage and knocked it in for the win. SPSG will now take on Severn at home on November 1 in the B Conference semifinals.

Severn advanced with a 2-0 win over Glenelg Country. Alaura Enright and Lexi Burchfield each scored in the shutout victory for the fourth-seeded Admirals.

On the other half of the bracket, second-seeded and 19th-ranked Maryvale Prep routed Indian Creek, 8-1, sixth-seeded Mount de Sales upset third-seeded John Carroll, 2-1. Maryvale will host Mount de Sales in the other semifinal. Thursday’s winners will advance to Sunday’s IAAM B Conference championship game at Stevenson University (2:00 p.m.).
