2017 football season kicks off Saturday; Poggi makes St. Frances coaching debut



Calvert Hall coach Donald Davis will try for his 100th career victory in the Cardinals’ season opener Saturday against Silver Oak Academy. He’s in his 11th season at his alma-mater after guiding Cardinal Gibbons for four seasons.

Canada Prep Academy vs. St. Frances Academy

Where: Sugar Cain Field, Dunbar

Time: 12 p.m.

After an impressive turnaround in 2016, the Panthers are aiming to show it wasn’t a fluke. The defending MIAA A Conference champs and last year’s consensus area top-ranked team, is rated No. 23 nationally by MaxPreps. Former longtime Gilman School coach Biff Poggi makes his coaching debut, sharing duties with Henry Russell.

Silver Oak at Calvert Hall College

Time: 2 p.m.

The Cardinals look for a second straight season-opening win. Since 2010, Calvert Hall has had a winning season when claiming its first match. A victory would give coach Donald Davis his 100th career triumph.

Gonzaga College at Gilman School

Time: 3:30 p.m.

The Greyhounds hope for a promising start after a difficult 2016 (2-9). Gonzaga, which lost to McDonogh School in the 2016 opener, features offensive linemen Aidan Rafferty, who’s committed to Indiana University. Gilman hasn’t lost a season opener to a team from the DMV region since 2006.

St. Vincent Pallotti at McDonogh School

Time: 7 p.m.

After an impressive run to the MIAA B Conference championship in 2016, the Panthers start the new season against the elite of the MIAA A. The Laurel school owns the area’s longest current winning streak – 10 games. McDonogh has won its last four season openers.
