A 17-yard first quarter field goal by Dom Maggio staked visiting Boys’ Latin to a 3-0 first quarter lead, but St. Mary’s countered with 26 unanswered points in the second quarter and went on to register a pivotal 26-10 MIAA B Conference football victory over the Lakers, Friday night in Annapolis.

In handing Boys’ Latin (5-2, 2-1) its first league loss, St. Mary’s (4-3, 2-1) climbed into a second place tie with John Carroll, which lost at undefeated St. Paul’s on Friday.

Quarterback Spencer Coyle, who threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns, got St. Mary’s on the board with a 24 yard TD toss to Liam Kelly.  Monte Jones kept the second quarter surge going with a 35 yard interception return for a touchdown and Matt Wallace followed with a 22 yard touchdown catch, from Coyle, to stretch the Saints’ lead to 20-3.

The final score of the quarter was a one yard run by running back Bryce Carrasco.  Carrasco was a workhorse for St. Mary’s coach Tony Marino, carrying the ball 25 times for 194 yards.

Next week St. Mary’s will go on the road to face Annapolis Area Christian before traveling to St. Paul’s on Oct. 26 to close its league schedule.

Boys’ Latin will travel to John Carroll next Friday night before closing its season with critical home games against Archbishop Curley and St. Paul’s.  The Lakers currently sit in fourth place in the conference and four teams go to the playoffs.
