No. 3 Falcons avenge recent loss to Chesapeake-AA
Just one week ago, Chesapeake-Anne Arundel spoiled Severna Park’s bid for an unbeaten field hockey season and knocked the third-ranked Falcons from the perch atop the VSN Field Hockey Top 20, with a 1-0 victory.
Turnabout is fair play, however, and Thursday at Glen Burnie High, Severna Park got its revenge, topping the No. 2 Cougars, 2-1, in the Anne Arundel County field hockey championship match.
Lila Slattery scored the game winner in overtime, striking a rebound of her own shot, just 21 seconds after the overtime got underway.
Severna Park (13-1 overall) got an early lead on a goal by Alex Miller, just 82 seconds into the contest, but Chesapeake (11-4) dominated the action much of the way in regulation, creating 12 penalty corner opportunities. Shelby Bennoit finally got Chesapeake even, with 12:42 left in the second half, when she finally broke through on a penalty corner.
This is the second straight year Severna Park owns at least a share of the crown after battling South River to a draw in last year’s final. Both teams now move on to the state playoffs, with Chesapeake a strong contender for a 3A state crown and Severna Park a favorite in 4A.
