No. 6 Dunbar pulls away from Mervo; West and McCormick combine for 45 (VIDEO HERE!!)


Jamal West scored a game-high 23 points and senior Malik McCormick added 22 as No. 6 Dunbar High defeated Mervo, 75-58, in a Baltimore City Division I boys’ basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The Poets (5-0 overall, 1-0 Division I) outscored the Mustangs, 20-9, in the final quarter to win their league opener. Zephaniah Esguerra chipped in with 14 points and senior guard/forward Dashawn Phillip finished with 13.

Will Thomas scored 20 points for Mervo (1-1, 0-1 Division I). The Mustangs trailed 20-7 late in the first and 38-27 at halftime, but rallied to within 55-49 after three. Thomas, a transfer from Mount Carmel, scored 14 in the frame and 20 in the second half.

Mervo hosts southern Maryland’s Huntingtown in a non-league contest Friday afternoon. The Poets next play Dec. 27 against Downingtown (PA) at the Reading (PA) Christmas Tournament.
