Severn senior basketball star L.J. Owens is breathing rarified air this night after a surpassing a major career milestone not frequently seen by even the best high school basketball players.

In a 74-35 MIAA B Conference rout of Chapelgate Christian, on Friday, Owens scored 24 points including the 2,000th of his high school career.

“It is such a special honor,” said Owens on the points milestone. “I am actually humbled and speechless. I hope it is a reflection of my hard work and dedication but none of this could have happened without my family, my teammates and my coaches. I am very proud of the accomplishment and I cannot thank them enough.”

Severn coach V.J. Keith believes Owens, who will play at William & Mary next year, is overlooked among the area’s top players.

“I could not be more proud of LJ,” said Keith. “He is such a special player but more importantly he is such a special person and a special teammate. I sometimes feel he is under appreciated and under recognized, but this truly shows what an amazing player he is. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest players in the DMV. I am so happy for him and this accomplishment. It is a reflection of all his dedication and he has truly earned this amazing feat.”

In improving to 19-5 overall and 8-3 in the B Conference, Severn also received 23 points from AJ Burch and one from Jermaine Hall.
