Middletown (No.3 in the latest rankings by the Maryland State Wrestling Association) came into the 1A/2A state dual meet tournament at North Point High School in Waldorf as heavy favorites. They proved those odds correct, as they downed Sparrows Point, 56-19 in the final. The Knights defeated Bayside Conference power North Caroline in the semi-finals, 55-15. In that match, Middletown jumped out to a 55-0 lead.

“The team has worked incredibly hard all year to prepare and get better,” Middletown coach James Schartner said. “(It’s a) very special team.  (I’m) very pleased with the way we wrestled today. I’m thankful for coaches and families for making Middletown wrestling what it is.”

The finals match with Sparrows Point started out in close fashion. After six matches the Knights held a 16-13 lead. They won the first three bouts to go up 16-0. Defending state champ, Sean Mullican (220) got them started right with a pin over Justin Rallo. Jeremy Farran (106) added another pin and Jason Guglielmini (113) tallied a major-decision.

The Point battled back with three straight wins of their own. Mike Fouts (120) pinned Ethan Grossnickle, Skyler Minutelli registered an 8-0 major-decision of Ethan’s brother, Noah. Max Hammond (132)closed the run with a 5-2 victory over Sean Farran.

Middletown took control of the match at this point and reeled off five consecutive wins to put the match away. Three-time state champion, Danny Bertoni (138), and Adam Bain (152) picked up falls during this streak. Josh Paige (145) earned a major-decision, 18-4, over Ethan Hoenig.

Nick Madden (160) clinched the win for the Knights with a pin of Quentin Hager at the 3:19 mark of the second period. Cam Farrow (170) followed that win a pin of his own to push the score to 44-13.

Sparrows Point’s No.1 Ethan Smith (182) pinned Beau Hermann for the last of the Point’s scoring. Middletown’s Sean Hermann (195) and Tyler Clemmer (220) closed the match with pins to make the final score, 56-19.

Sparrows Point beat No.18 Oakland Mills, 56-19, in the semi-finals. It was their second win over the Scorpions this year, with the first one coming at the Scorpion Duals in December.

The match was close in the beginning with Oakland Mills holding a 9-6 lead after three bouts. The Point went on a five-match win streak to take a lead they would not surrender, 32-9. In that stretch, Max Hammond (No.10 at 138) defeated the Scorpions’ two-time state runner-up, Kyle Farace (No.4 at 132), 4-0.

The two squads traded wins over the next three matches. When Anthony Morales (160) was only able to secure a major-decision over T.J. Saunders, the hay was in the barn, as that left the Point ahead 38-19 with just three matches left. The Pointers closed it out with a pin by Hager (160), while Drew Gorsuch (170) and Smith (182) received forfeits to add to the final tally.

“Two years ago, when we won regional duals, I felt like the team thought they completed their mission from the year before,” Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner continued. “If you remember, we lost to Hereford by a pin in the last match to lose by one the year before that.

“So, when we arrived at state duals they were content. We then got our brains beat in by Oakland Mills. It was embarrassing. We did not wrestle well at all. This year was different. We were excited that we won, but we knew that we were not done. We had some unfinished business with Oakland Mills. It worked out perfectly that we got to wrestle them first. We beat them earlier this year, but as I was told by people “they treat their tournament like the preseason.” That fired us up a ton. We had something to prove and the kids went out and wrestled well. The two big matches to me were Josh Hux battling back to pin the kid at 220 and Max Hammond knocking off Farace. I think making it to the state dual finals and going 35-5 on the year gives the program credibility at the state level. We had a number of our rec kids there yesterday which was just awesome. That is how you continue something like this.”
