Disqualifications no distraction for No. 4 Patriots; Quickley has 29 (VIDEO HERE!!)
Immanuel Quickley scored 29 points and junior forward Gultekin added 24 as No. 4 John Carroll School defeated seventh-ranked and host Boys’ Latin School, 84-62, in a MIAA A Conference Black Division basketball contest inside the Gelston Center.
The Bel Air school (8-2 overall, 3-0 MIAA A Black) led by as many as 25 points in the second half, posting its second straight win this week over a VSN Top 10 squad. Tuesday, the Patriots defeated second-ranked Perry Hall at Harford Community College.
Leading 39-32 at halftime, John Carroll scored the first seven points in the third quarter, capped with Montez Mathis’ layup, for a 46-32 advantage. Mathis, a Rutgers University recruit, celebrated the score and was assessed his second technical foul. The senior guard, who finished with 10 points, was automatically ejected.
The Patriots put the contest away with a 21-6 run, featuring seven points each from Quickley, who will play for Kentucky next year, and Gultekin for a 67-42 advantage.
John Carroll played the final four minutes without coach John Zito, who was ejected. After Zito called a timeout, someone from John Carroll used an obscenity.
Under MIAA rules, Zito was ejected.
Senior forward Jaylin Andrews led Boys’ Latin (7-2, 2-2 MIAA A Black) with 19 points and Kenny Lewis finished with 11. It was the second straight defeat for the Lakers after winning their first seven decisions.
Boys’ Latin will look to rebound at the Oakland Mills Holiday Tournament where they will play Arundel in the opening round Wednesday.
