No. 4 Patriots win tune up for Wells Challenge behind 31 from Mathis

Rutgers University recruit Montez Mathis scored 31 points and Nigel Haughton added 12 as No. 4 John Carroll School defeated No. 9 McDonogh School, 81-66, in a MIAA A Conference Black Division boys’ basketball contest in Owings Mills.

The Patriots (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAA A Black) pulled away from the hosts in the final quarter, outscoring the Eagles, 28-17, to post their five double-digit victory in the early season. John Carroll, which beat defending MIAA A champ and No. 2 Mount St. Joseph by 21 in its season opener last week, has only loss to No. 5 St. Frances Academy.

Florida recruit Noah Locke finished with 24 points for McDonogh (1-3, 0-1 MIAA A Black), and Drew Green added 18. Curtis Jacobs chipped in 14.

The Eagles next play Monday while John Carroll is back in action Thursday afternoon at 5:30 against No. 10 Lake Clifton at Coppin State in the 2nd annual William Wells Challenge.

No. 8 Dunbar takes on Calvert Hall College in the second match at 7:30 p.m.
