Breakdown of Poets' 2017 schedule
With the start of practice for the 2017 high school football season approaching, Varsity Sports Network's Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
2016 record: 9-4 (Class 2A state semifinalist)
2016 review: The Poets rebounded from 0-2 start to reach the 2A state semifinals, losing to eventual state champ Walkersville from Frederick County. The east Baltimore school have 33 letterwinners scheduled to return, including senior quarterback Jared Lewis and senior running back/linebacker Sean Tolbert.
2017 opponents' win/loss record (from 2016) 57-42 (.576)
Toughest 2017 opponent: Mervo. The Mustangs have supplanted Dunbar as the city's best, winning the last three Division I titles. Senior quarterback Carlos Davis and running back/defensive back Rykim Lemon will anchor 35 scheduled returning letterwinners.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Potomac. The Wolverines from Prince George's County have reached the last two 3A state semifinals. The Oxon Hill school have three Division I commits in Donta Anthony (Old Dominion), Ryan Carroll (UCONN) and Jonnie Pitman (Charlotte).
By a number: 15. Consecutive state playoff appearances by Dunbar, second longest streak in area (Old Mill - 18).
