Breakdown of Panthers' 2017 schedule

With the start of practice for the 2017 high school football season approaching, Varsity Sports Network's Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Annapolis Panthers

2016 record: 11-2 (Class 4A state semifinalist)

2016 review: The Panthers advanced to their first state semifinal since 2000. The Anne Arundel County school (No. 5 in final VSN Top 20 poll in 2016) graduated the league's best player in Cameron Hough, but will have Dayshawn Womack and Omar'od White, both all-league first team picks in 2016, leading the charge in 2017.

2017 opponents' win/loss record (from 2016): 59-46 (.562)

Toughest 2017 opponent: Archbishop Spaldng. The Cavaliers finished ranked No. 2 in the area as runner-up in the MIAA A Conference, the region's toughest league. The Severn school graduated VSN Offensive Player of the Year Evan Fochtman (Navy), but the Cavaliers should be again among the area's elite with all-league performers Jamari Jones, Cody Winokur and Sean Spencer.

Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Old Mill. The Patriots won the Anne Arundel County title in 2016 and 2015. The Millersville school will again reload with another talented crop of athletes, led by all-league linebacker Aaron Dawson.

By a number: 6. Difference in number of victories the past two seasons (19) by compared to wins between 2010 to 2014 (13).
