Calvert Hall ousts Gilman in baseball elimination battle

Top-ranked Cardinals jump on Greyhounds early in an 8-1 victory
Top-ranked Calvert Hall staved off an early exit from the MIAA A Conference baseball playoffs, Tuesday, bouncing back from Monday’s loss to Loyola, with an 8-1 win over visiting Gilman in a playoff elimination game, at Calvert Hall.

The Cardinals (24-3) scored three runs in the first and two in the second to get the early jump on the third-seeded Greyhounds.

After struggling to string together hits against Loyola, Calvert Hall got 11 base knocks against Gilman.

Gabe Nieto had two hits, including a double, and two RBI, Garrett Matheny was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and a one scored and JP Murphy was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Brendan Webster added a double, three runs scored and an RBI and Jose Torres had a triple.

On the mound, Matt Hentschel pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out four.

Charlie Darby knocked in Gilman’s only run with a double as the Greyhounds saw their season end with a  23-11 record.

Calvert Hall will play at home again on Wednesday as they host sixth-seeded Archbishop Curley in another elimination game. Also on Wednesday, fourth-seeded Loyola will visit second-seeded Archbishop Spalding in the winners’ bracket final. The winner of that game will be the first team to advance to Sunday’s finals at Harford Community College.
