Patriots top Catholic in final at-bat
Emma Kropkowski singled home Meg Sheehan with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, giving John Carroll School a 3-2 victory over Catholic, in an IAAM A Conference softball quarterfinal contest in Bel Air Tuesday.
The Patriots (8-7 overall) will travel to two-time defending champ Archbishop Spalding Thursday afternoon in Severn for a semifinal match. The winner will play either Mount de Sales Academy or McDonogh School in the title Saturday afternoon at Harford Community College.
Sheehan started the winning rally with a two-out walk, then stole second. Kropkowski singled to centerfield, bringing home Sheehan and completing a comeback.
The Patriots trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, but freshman Emma Ritter singled, stole second and scored on an throwing error. Ritter also had a RBI fly out, scoring Sheehan in the first inning.
Catholic (4-9) got a RBI triple from Sierra Stark in the third inning and Britney Burke scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth. The Cubs had only two hits off Kropkowski, who struck out six.
Sierra Zittle was brilliant in defeat for Catholic, allowing six hits and striking out 12.
