Virginia Tech bound star strikes out 16 Gaels

Stephen PelliSt. Mary’s junior ace Stephen Pelli, a Virginia Tech recruit, retired the first eight batters he faced, including five by strike out, Monday, as he pitched 6.2 innings of one-hit ball to lead No. 9 St. Mary’s to a 4-0 MIAA A Conference baseball victory over host Mount St. Joseph.

Pelli’s perfect game was ended by a four-pitch walk, but he struck out the next batter and finished with 16 K’s. Pelli threw 115 pitches and carried his no-hit bid into the seventh before it was broken up a two-out single by Matt Gibbs. Pelli then departed and Cam Nolet came on to record the final out of the contest.

Colin Taeschner led St. Mary’s at the plate with two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Nick Hopkins and Clay Wargo also had two hits each. Nick Quinn and Jacob Way each collected one RBI by drawing bases loaded walks, and Quinn walked three times in the game.

The Saints (13-5 overall) improved to 5-3 in the A Conference where they are in fifth place, but just two games off the pace of the league leaders. St. Joe (6-11 overall) is now 1-8 in league play.
