St. Joe claims Conley Tournament title

Gibbs named MVP
The Mount Saint Joseph baseball team scored 19 runs in two games and came away with the title at its own Jack Conley Tournament, Saturday in Irvington.

defeated South Carroll in the first game 9-0 and defeated Saint Michaels 10-3 in the championship game. Saint Michaels defeated Saint Mary's-Ryken in their first round game 7-5.

In the opener, the Gaels blanked South Carroll, 9-0, as Connor Feustle and Michael McManus combined to pitch a one hitter. Feustle helped his own cause by hitting a home run.

Matt Gibbs also hit a home run when MSJ broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the bottom of the third. St. Joe had 10 hits to go with their 10 runs.

In the championship game, the Gaels had to come from behind but eventually coasted to a 10-3 victory, against Saint Michaels.

St. Michaels held early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 lead early, before the Gaels tied the score in the bottom of the fourth . St. Joe then scored seven unanswered runs.

Matt Hopkins picked up the victory in relief of Naite Reese. Matt Conley and Paul Sullivan each pitched an inning in relief to help seal the victory. Ethan Gallagher was 4-for-4 in the championship including a big opposite field home run to help MSJ get back in the game. Gibbs and Michael McManus each hit a double to help support the offensive effort.

Gibbs was named the Willie Staso Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
