Glenelg’s McAuliffe stretches scoreless streak to 42 innings

Gladiators split two at Howard Invitational; host Lions sweep a pair
John McAuliffeGlenelg senior pitcher John McAuliffe came away with a tough-luck loss, Tuesday afternoon, as No. 11 Howard claimed a 3-2 walk-off win over the Gladiators in their meeting at the Howard Invitational.

McAuliffe pitched went 6.2 innings, but did not allow an earned run. He has now gone 42 innings in his varsity career without giving up an earned run.

The Lions trailed 2-0 entering the final inning but got two on with one out on a single by Gabe Delgado and an error off the bat of Sam Jacobson. McAuliffe then got the second out, but Craig Wiley drove in the tying runs with a single, stole second and scored the game-winner on a single by Cameron Robinson.

McAuliffe struck out five and walked two.

Glenelg jumped on top with two runs in the top of the fifth. Seth Taylor opened the inning with a double and Hunter Koele drew a one out walk. Both runners advance a base before Hunter Forsyth picked up an RBI on fielder’s choice grounder. Hank Koele then drove home his brother with an RBI single.

Delgado was the winning pitcher as he tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Later in the day, Howard routed No. 13 Towson, 19-3, and Glenelg defeated the Generals, 6-0.

McCauliffe was the hitting star in the win over Towson, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Sam Elisio had two hits, a run scored and three RBI. Sean Kinloch also drove in two runs.

As a junior, McAuliffe tossed 21 innings allowing just one run, which was unearned. This year, he has allowed eight unearned runs, including the three on Tuesday, in another 21 innings of work, giving him a 0.00 ERA for his high school career thus far.

"We are all so happy for John, a great student athlete, who works hard and always stays humble,” said Glenelg coach Steve Ballance. “This streak is so impressive and shows how consistent he has been in his varsity career. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach and work with him.”
